Better Basics

At Better Basics, our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families by advancing literacy through enrichment and intervention programs. We currently provide our services to approximately 60 schools in the Birmingham area and throughout Alabama. Our programs include reading enrichment programs (Ready 2 Read and MORE), Reading and Writing Intervention, afterschool programs located in Fairfield (the HOPE Center) and Schoolwide Enrichment. During the 08-09 school year Better Basics awarded children and their parents more than 36,000 books and served almost 18,800 students. The mission of The Literacy Council is to strengthen and support organizations that provide literacy services in Central Alabama. The Literacy Council is dedicated to reducing illiteracy in Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties. The Council’s efforts include providing resources and referrals by maintaining a toll-free Literacy Helpline which serves as a primary point of contact for individuals seeking literacy assistance.
